Tutoring
Writing isn't one-size-fits-all! Different writing projects - and different writers - need different approaches. As a tutor, I help student writers understand their options so they can choose tools and strategies that fit their personal style and clearly communicate their ideas.
Since 2007, I've worked with all kinds of students: from those who enjoy writing and want to progress further, to those who have previously struggled to meet grade-level expectations. Rather than just following formulas, I help students understand when and why certain choices are effective--and how to flexibly adapt their approach to whatever assignment, topic, or project they have at the moment.
As an experienced university instructor and former high school teacher, I know the importance of individualized instruction, so I fully personalize each session to match your specific needs and goals. With fun discussions, tailored instruction, and targeted activities, students develop skill and confidence as communicators.
If you have a 5th-12th grade student looking to improve their writing, please consider one of my options below:
- Online: I use Outschool for online meetings. Along with 1:1 tutoring for writing, I also offer small-group seminars that equip students to understand, analyze, and discuss literary and/or historical texts. You can find more information, contact me to see if my approach is a good fit, and schedule a meeting via Outschool.
- In-person: If you've heard of me through a friend or seen one of my flyers, please email me to discuss your goals and find out if my approach is a good fit for you.
We had the absolute pleasure of working with Amy as a writing tutor... From the very first session, she struck the perfect balance between being encouraging and instructive. She didn’t rely on cookie-cutter exercises; instead, she tailored each lesson with imaginative activities that brought writing concepts to life. What impressed us most was her ability to connect with our son on his level. She listened, adapted, and celebrated his progress, no matter how small. Her feedback was always thoughtful and constructive, helping him grow in confidence and skill without ever feeling overwhelmed. Thanks to her guidance, our son’s writing has blossomed—not just in technique, but in enthusiasm. We’re so grateful for the impact she’s had and would wholeheartedly recommend her to any family looking for a tutor who brings both heart and brilliance to their work.
